About Justin Hernandez
I express myself in my photography, not so much in my writing. With that said, I find film photography to be the most rewarding and satisfying art form I’ve pursued. I’m in total control, I can set my own pace and it causes me to slow down and be more intentional in my shooting. I love the technicality and limitations of it all.
I enjoy the fact photography isn’t creating something from nothing. It’s capturing what’s already there from the most interesting point of view.
Apart from photography, I love cooking, barbecuing (anything from smoking a brisket to making Korean honey-garlic chicken), and mixology (whiskey sours and paper planes are my go-to cocktails).
Music also heavily influences my photography. I’ll put on my favorite albums or playlists when shooting and editing film, from Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers to Mac Miller, and everything in between.
Now that film, and photography in general, has become my primary focus, it seems like I’m always looking at things from a photographer’s point of view even when I don’t have a camera with me—neon signs, abandoned cars, and California “golden hour” will never be the same.
